  • The law of cause and effect is not a play of destiny.

    Recently, the learner from the United States of America, Elana Dower has questioned the law of cause and effect in society as follows: “you say that the circumstances in our life today are because of karma. Does that mean that everything about today has to do with what happened before? I have seen on other forums this concept of buddhism questioned and sometimes deeply hurt people, especially those who have suffered abuse as a child because they cannot accept they deserve the abuse they suffered.”

    Even in a less extreme situation the same would apply. For example If someone is narcissistic and insulting we have an instinct to distance ourselves because we know that we deserve better.”

    And then she concluded the reality related to the social problems with her spiritual question as follows:

    “Also as buddhists if we see a crime in action, let’s say someone is being robbed are we to call for help? Or standby and let it happen because the robber and the victim are just playing out their karma which is already written?”

    From this reason, I would like to clarify this issue with the right view for the so called “the law of cause and effect” that the learner Elana Dower has made misinterptations.

    Indeed, the Buddha pointed out that all human beings are all undergoing the rewards or retributions which are due to causes and effects from their past lives, which was stated in the Sutra on Cause and Effect in the Three Periods of Time. For example, the ones who are poor in his whole life are caused by that their stingy greed made them squeeze every penny in their pvious lives. For those whose statures are extremely short because they defamed the virtuous elders and the wise in their past lives.

    1/ He cannot change the destiny of sentient beings

    2/ He cannot save those who have no affinities with him

    3/ He cannot save all sentient beings from delusion because there are too many beings in the Samsara.

    For the second example made by the learner Elana Dower related to the social problems and it is a crime in action and she wondered that “if it happen because the robber and the victim are just playing out their karma which is already written?” No. You should not think like that. It is the wrong thought. The Buddha in a pvious life as ship’s captain who killed a robber to save 500 merchants in the ship. Thanks to his action of saving other lives, he accumulated a hundred times more merits rather than being accused of killing a bad person. Therefore, in Buddhism, there is a means of supporting in The Noble Eightfold Path. It is “right thought” which defines what the priority in the primary and secondary relationship is on the basis of benefiting the living beings. In addition, Buddhism focuses on the principle of that “compassion and wisdom go hand in hand” to observe the actions of body, speech and mind, just like the eagle who has two winds of wisdom and compassion can fly higher and further; up to the sky of liberation. For this reason, the Buddha also introduced the principle to apply the percepts into the certain circumstances for monks and lay Buddhists, which consists of the following four categories: fixation, flexibility, observance and violation. I would like to make an example of that you see an evil doer chasing the good one. The good one hides in your house for safe. Then the bad guy asks you whether you see the good one or not. What will you say? Can you say that he (she) is hiding in your house? Of course not.

    From this case, we should think about the second example Elana Dower has made. I think Elana Dower can answer her question. Likewise, when being insulted by a narcissistic person, you understand what he (she) should do. But the statement you wrote that ” Person A has bad karma and will not progress as quickly to enlightenment” It is wrong. Every aspect in karma has the method to change. Every good act brings its own reward by the law of compensation.Though person A made a bad karma, he had done many good deeds. So his good acts bring their own reward by the law of compensation. Similarly, when you earn a lot of money, you can spend more a little bit on their personal needs. If you keep your narrow-mindedness, you become mean and stingily; your life becomes miserable even though you have a lot of money. In Buddha’s time, Angulimala killed 999 people, but after taking refuge in the Three Jewels, he practiced the dharma diligently and he then achieved the holy fruit.

    In short, I assert that the following mistakes may cause the difficulties for Elana Dower and other practitioners in obtaining the spiritual achievements if they do not give them up immediately:

    1 / you should not doubt the truth including the theory of causation taught by the Buddha because of your wrong thought or “fixed thoughts” or “extreme thoughts”. If you have doubts, you should question that if you read enough holy texts and understand deeply what the Buddha and enlightened ones taught in the scriptures or not. You should not disturb the Guru’s mind.

    3/ Please read carefully about what the Buddha taught in the detailed and comphensive spiritual respects including the four aspects of application to keep percepts in life (fixation, flexibility, observance and violation); the law of cause and effect in the Three Periods of Time (past, psent, future) to understand the right time to determine your actions so that you do not confuse the destiny with the capacity to change your destiny by doing good deeds.

    I have written some words to make clarification about this. I pray all sentient beings be awaken the enlightened state.
